A Wish Come True-A Bone Marrow Wish Creates Awareness

AABMAM_Magnet_ArtBone Marrow is an essential part of our health. Unfortunately African Americans are lacking in transplants and knowledge in order to attain proper transplants. To create awareness John C. Frierson founded A Bone Marrow Wish in 2003. This organization is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit that has worked diligently to bring awareness and education to African American, Asian American, Hispanic American, and Native American communities through health fairs, faith-based visits, family reunions, shopping mall events, and workplace meetings.

He is on a mission to educate the nation about the disparities among bone marrow and people of color. The inaugural “African American Bone Marrow Awareness Month” (AABMAM) campaign launch will be held at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit from 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. on June 26, 2010. This is the kickoff to a five city tour to create awareness.

The press conference at 11:00 a.m. will acknowledge congressional, health, and business supporters of this effort, include testimonials from donors and recipients, and announce details about the 2010 AABMAM Campaign. “The bone marrow donation process was so non-invasive that I have made it my mission to carry this urgent message to communities that may be hindered from joining the registry by myths and other factors,” said John C. Frierson. “The African American Bone Marrow Awareness Month campaign will support and engage African Americans in the process of making informed, proactive decisions about joining the national registry in order to potentially Save a Life.”

There are many political and medical professionals on board to help A Bone Marrow Wish. “We are especially excited to announce that Dr. Wanda Shurney, DMC Physician and Executive Director of the Sickle Cell Association of Detroit and the Lovelace family from Metro Detroit are a few of our AABMAM Campaign Champions.” Dr. Shurney’s expertise, support, and excitement are valuable to advancing the goals of this campaign. The Lovelace’s are a local family who will join us to share the experiences of their 7 year old daughter’s recent transplant and meet their bone marrow donor for the first time during the campaign launch.
