Wellness Wednesdays: Save Your Skin

There are many facts and misconceptions when it comes to skin cancer. Many people may get overwhelmed due to the amount of information on the subject .  Calming Corners caught up with Dr. Neal Schultz, M.D. America’s Leading Park Avenue Dermatologist. He shared some quick and informative facts about skin cancer and prevention.  He even gave us his four minute regimen for luminous and glowing skin.

Facts about skin cancer:

1. Skin cancer is THE most common cancer in the United States. There are reports of more than 1 million cases per year.

2. One American dies every hour from Malignant Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.

3. One blistering sunburn in childhood or adolescence more than doubles a person’s chances of developing melanoma later in life.

4. Between 40 and 50 percent of Americans who live to age 65 will have either Basal Cell or Squamous Cell cancer at least once.

5. Unlike the sun’s burning UV B rays, Cancer causing UV A rays are just as strong in winter as summer and just as damaging  in early morning and late afternoon as they are at 12 noon.

Myths about Skin Cancer:

1. You can’t get skin cancer under your bathing suit.

2. On cloudy overcast days you can’t get sunburned or skin cancer.

3. Tanning beds are safer than the sun.

4. Many people think, I don’t need to get my skin checked because I can tell nothing has changed. It is very important to get your skin checked.

5. Skin cancer isn’t as dangerous as other cancers.

Ways to protect yourself from the sun:

1. Wear sunglasses.

2. Use sunscreen with SPF 15 to 30 with UVA protection EVERY day all year even if it is winter or cloudy or raining.

3. Reapply sunscreen after every time you swim, sweat from sports and even reapply every 3 hours if you are just sitting under an umbrella.

4. Do your outdoor sports and activities before 11 a.m. or after 3 p.m. when the sun isn’t as strong.

5. Follow the shadow rule, when your shadow is shorter than you are, the sun is the most dangerous. Beware and take cover…literally.

Four steps for  luminous and glowing skin:

1. Preparing the skin by cleansing.

2. Toning the skin to remove any remaining residue.

3. Applying active ingredients appropriate for one’s color and texture issues.

4. Finishing with a sunscreen and/or moisturizer.

(Bonus Tip: Your diet plays a large part in regards to the appearance of your skin.)
